Opening Day and Donation Day in Telluride

Added: Sep 10, 2018
Category: Telluride Events and News

In the fall, there are two kinds of people: those who feel sad because the foliage is gone and autumn has come to an end, and those who are stoked because it means one thing—ski season!

Fans of the slopes are eagerly awaiting two events that historically precede the official opening of the winter season at Telluride Ski Resort.

The first is Donation Day, which, weather permitting, should fall this year on Wednesday, November 21, 2018. This is the day that purchasing a $25 lift ticket gets you access to the ski resort one day early. Note to Season passholders: this is the only day of the ski season where your pass won’t be valid—it’s cash and currency only. But, it’s for a great cause since 100 percent of the lift-ticket proceeds support the Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club.

Donation Day brings out the excitement in skiers and snowboarders from all over the country, as they wriggle their toes in their footwear standing in lines for their lift up the mountain. And there are always big smiles and thumbs up (and occasionally their photo in the local newspaper) for the crew who gets the “first chair” honors the morning that the chairlifts begin to operate for the season.

Then, on Thanksgiving Day, forget the turkey. It’s all about the “French Fries” and “Pizza Pies” as the official Opening Day of Telluride Ski Resort falls on Thursday, November 22 this year.

Rated the #1 ski resort in North America five out of the last six years by Condé Nast Traveler, this place has to be seen to be believed. Once the lifts take you to the top, prepare to be wowed by the spectacular unspoiled scenery among the 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks of Colorado’s majestic San Juan Mountains. Even the most seasoned pros consider this spot one of the most beautiful ski resorts with some of the most legendary terrain in the Northern Hemisphere.

And the Telluride Ski Resort has so much more to offer for kids, families and even non-skiers. Their Winter Activities page is chock full of adventure activities, cultural sights, nightlife, bars and restaurants and even a free pedestrian gondola that gets you back and forth between the town of Telluride and Mountain Village.

Although last year’s season started late due to the warmer jet streams due to La Niña hampering snow making operations, this year, the Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts Telluride will see the snowiest periods in late November.

If you’re planning a Telluride visit, SilverStar Telluride Luxury Properties not only has more thrilling outdoor adventure ideas but also has a team dedicated to making your stay as carefree as possible and will even plan your activities before you arrive. They can find you the perfect vacation property in Mountain Village or within walking distance of Telluride’s shopping and dining scene.
