Don't miss the summer's hottest event: The Telluride Jazz Festival
Imagine an outdoor venue so awe-inspiring, it makes you feel lucky just to experience it. That's the Telluride Jazz Festival, a three-day-and-night music festival coming up August 3 to 5 this year that draws people from all over the world. As Dizzy Gillespie once famously said of this place "...if this ain't paradise, heaven can wait."
The backdrop to this annual Jazz Fest boasts 13,000 foot peaks of the breathtaking San Juan mountains, while on the Main Stage, some of the world's most acclaimed musicians in jazz, funk, soul, folk and gospel give once-in-a-lifetime performances.
This legendary outdoor venue started in late August, 1977 when the Dizzy Gillespie Quartet and Muddy Waters took the stage, among many others, cementing this largely unknown festival as THE place to be each year for aficionados of jazz music. In the last 40+ years, the line up has expanded to include musical giants and rising talent such as Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Allen Toussaint, Chick Corea, as well as multiple stellar student bands getting their first break.
Now in its 42nd year, The Telluride Jazz Festival is hotter than ever with acts such as Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers, the amazing New Orleans soul singer, Irma Thomas, and saxophonists Karl Denson's Tiny Universe among others. Here is the 2018 line up.
But, beyond the pristine mountainous environment, the immersive music, the chill and intimate vibe of the crowd lounging in lawn chairs or letting loose and dancing, there is so much more to this long weekend. Before and after the Jazz Festival, there are world-class recreational activities to experience, such as hiking, biking and stand up paddleboarding or shopping and walking tours in historic downtown Telluride. During the Festival, participants can do morning yoga, check out interactive artist performances on the Society Stage at Elks Park, and get their fill from top-notch food and beer and wine vendors. Not to mention the kids will be thrilled by Sunday's New Orleans Second Line Parade with its colorful floats, costumes, beads and decorations.
At night, the fun continues moving out of Telluride Town Park back downtown, where there will be a jazz art walk and special Jazz After Dark late night performances.
