How to Spend an Epic Spring Break in Telluride

Added: Apr 04, 2019
Category: Explore Colorado

Spring break for many colleges and universities is roughly the first week of March, but even if you're way past your academic years, March in Telluride is a spectacular time to take a vacation with friends or family. Here’s why:

Skiing Is Still Great!

With daily average temperatures hovering between 32 and 39 F, and March being Telluride’s snowiest month, you’ve got ideal conditions for skiing and snowboarding: it’s warm and sunny, with plenty of open terrain and powder days stretching well into spring.

And this time of year, it’s never as crowded as other Colorado resorts. If you’d rather avoid the spring break crowd, book your vacation after the second week. And if you’re bringing the kids, consider catching the annual Cardboard Sled Derby for ages 5 to 14.

The Social Scene Is Hopping

With ski runs that drop straight into town, you can click off your skis and get right to the heart of Telluride’s social scene — as the entire town is the base. There are many ski-in/ski-out, independently owned restaurants and bars, and the après-ski is fantastic.

Also, restaurants and bars are fully open for at least another month before off-season. If you really want to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine on a balmy March day, stop for lunch at Bon Vivant on the mountain and take in stellar views and delicious French cuisine on its outdoor deck.

Arts & Entertainment

If you’re more the indoor type and wondering what there is to do in Telluride, this small town has an outsized cultural reputation when it comes to festivals, art galleries, museums and lively parties. From Art Walks to block parties, fashion shows to high-profile bands, March in Telluride is chock full of events to coincide with your spring break. There is literally something going on every single night. See the entire line up for March.

Fun for Families

For those sunny days, The San Juan Outdoor School Adventures have a slew of interesting ways to spend time together. Ice climbing, snowshoe tours and backcountry skiing are on the winter/spring menu. The experienced guides are adept at leading multi-age groups, which is perfect for parents, kids and grandparents.

For gloomy days, there is still no shortage of activities for kids from the Ah Haa School for the Arts, including No School Art Days. Or, head on inside to the Pinhead Institute’s Cyber Clubhouse for a drop-in free program for kids to play coding games, build basic apps, learn to 3D model, and more. And, if your child is having a birthday the week of your Telluride vacation, they have you covered.
