Time to Hit the Bike Trails in Telluride

Added: Apr 04, 2019
Category: Explore Colorado

Between early April (when many restaurants take a spring break and the gondola shuts down) until May 25—this off-season stretch is a wonderfully quiet time to spend in Telluride without all of the crowds and bustle. With spring waking up the meadows and greening up the rugged San Juan mountains, this is a perfect time to take advantage of a number of un-populated Telluride mountain bike trails. The Mountain Village Biking Trail Map has a list of some of the most popular trails, with descriptions and ratings for each so you know what to expect before you venture out. Don’t worry if you don’t travel with your bike. There are places that offer mountain bike rentals like Telluride Sports, where they have both full-suspension freeride and cross-country trail bikes for all ages with packages from half-day to full-day tripping.

Here are five scenic trails offering some of the best mountain biking in Telluride.

River Trail (4.0 mi)

This is the perfect single-track trail for beginning mountain bikers or for those who’d rather cruise and take in the scenery over crushing the trail. Once you pedal away from town, River Trail is an easy-breezy flow through the woods. You can choose to either take the Upper or Lower trail that branch off at the 1.5-mile mark, with each one looping back at the end for a nice, uncomplicated ride.

Bear Creek Falls (5.0 mi)

If you’re looking for another fairly easy, family-friendly trail that starts from town, Bear Creek Falls Trail is one of the top five hiking and biking trails in Telluride. It’s only 2.5 miles one way (a little over an hour) to get to the Falls, which are as refreshing as they are visually stunning. Along the well-marked wooded trail, you’ll ride across streams, meadows and clearings. This is a scenic, leisurely ride, climbing to an easy 1,050-foot elevation.

Deep Creek Trail (7.5 mi)

This single-track trail is accessible from two directions as you zip along the verdant forest of spruce and aspen, while enjoying views of wildflower meadows and river frontage. Deep Creek Trail is one of the more biker-friendly trails on the north side of town and biking experts recommend heading west to east for an easier, “more-flowy” ride. You’ll get a gentler climb and a shorter but steeper downhill. At portions of this trail however, be prepared to hike-a-bike.

See Forever (8.5 mi)

The See Forever/Wasatch Connection Loop, a popular trail frequented by hikers and bikers alike, is a two-mile hike from the gondola, and requires a burst of effort in a steep climb to get to the first sweet spot—a scenic spot that looks over all of Bear Creek and Revelation Bowl. There are some narrow and steep switchbacks and lots of climbing above the tree line, but the rewards are plenty: waterfalls, crossing an old wooden mining bridge and at the top, where, as the trail name promises–you can see forever.
