The Best Things to Do in Telluride in the Fall

Added: Sep 10, 2019

Fall is in the Air at Telluride

Even though fall is considered the "shoulder month," which means fewer crowds before peak season, it's absolutely the best time for outdoor lovers, fall foliage peepers and festival goers to witness all of Telluride's fall colors. Here's the lowdown on what to hit while you're in town.

Fall Foliage Hikes in Telluride

With crisp, cool sunny days, and golden carpets of aspen trees covering the San Juans, autumn is the best season for hikers in Telluride. Typically, the foliage starts to change in mid-September and spans to the middle of October. Here are two easy-to-moderate hikes that will literally transport you into another dimension of unsurpassed beauty. Bear Creek Canyon, preserved by the Telluride Land Trust, is nearly five miles round trip, but along the way rugged cliffs and gushing waterfalls of the Bear Creek Canyon will be your reward. Jud Wiebe is nearly three miles with switchbacks a few times up through an aspen grove, which opens up to the high point of the trail - it's a bit of a climb but the view is breathtaking.

Great Trails for Bikes

The new Telluride Bike Park opened this past June with approximately 15 trails and 17 miles of terrain, offering a variety of interconnected trails (Free-ride, Technical, and Cross-Country) as well as clinics and guided rides for first-timers. Best of all, the Telluride Bike Park is "gravity fed" (that means little or no pedaling involved) and accessible by the Village Express Chairlift (Lift 4) and the Gondola. Easy up. Easy down.

Speaking of the Gondola…

To enjoy all of the mountainous beauty of Telluride's fall foliage with zero effort involved, simply hop on the free gondola that takes you from the town of Telluride to Mountain Village and back again. The gondola, the first and only free public transportation of its kind in the United States, gives you "a front-row seat with Mother Nature at 10,540 feet and access to a copious amount of biking, hiking and skiing trails as well as shops, restaurants and watering holes."

Did we mention fall festivals?

Beyond outdoor activities, there are enough Telluride fall festivals and fall activities that will make you want to spend a fall weekend here.

Telluride Blues & Brews Festival (Sept. 13-15) is not just "a three-day celebration of blues, funk, jam bands, indie, rock, gospel and soul performances - accompanied by some of the best craft breweries in the country," there's even art exhibits, outdoor activities, artist meet-and-greets, and late night shows to round out the experience.

Cars and Colors (Sept. 26-29) is a world-class automotive celebration, pairing automobile, motorcycle and aircraft aficionados with September's spectacular autumnal colors.

Original Thinkers (Oct 3-6) is a unique festival melding "riveting speakers, unforgettable films and mind-expanding art and performance" with a unique perspective on the crucial issues of our times.

Horror Show (Oct. 11-13) is Colorado's longest running horror film fest for aficionados of that genre. The line up offers some of the best feature films and programs in the country with some of the most fun (and costumed) film fans packing the resort town of Telluride.
