The mountainous remote region of Telluride, Colorado, is far away from cities – exactly what makes it so appealing to skiers and nature lovers. But getting there can take a bit more effort. Whether you’re from the East Coast, West Coast, or somewhere in between, here’s the breakdown of the best options for flying into Telluride.
Montrose-Telluride Regional Airport (MTJ)
Best for East Coast/West Coast Travel
The Montrose Regional Airport is the best gateway for Telluride with nonstop flights from 11 hubs during the winter months. From Newark or from Los Angeles, this is the go-to airline to get here. Although the airport is 65 miles away, it’s a spectacular 75-minute drive with San Juan Mountain vistas. Rental cars are also available at the Montrose Airport, but once you are in the town of Telluride, there is no need for a vehicle. So travel experts recommend using a an airport transfer service such as Telluride Express or Mountain Limo.
Telluride Regional Airport (TEX)
Best for Denver Connection/Private Planes
Denver International Airport, the nearest international airport, offers multiple daily flights from Denver to Telluride Regional Airport. Although the upside to using TEX is the convenience – it is only 15 minutes from Mountain Village – the ticket price will be higher. The Telluride Airport is also ideal for charter and private planes. Another bonus of flying into TEX (as we’ve mentioned in our blog) is that, for the first time in its history, the Telluride Regional Airport now offers commercial flights. Book through United Airlines, as they’ve partnered with Denver Air.
Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT)
Best for West Coast/South/Cheaper/No Hurry
As the Grand Junction Regional Airport is 2 1/2 hours away from Telluride, ticket prices tend to be lower than to Montrose. Also, statistically, GJT does have a slight edge over MTJ in on-time performance in winter months. So, for those who aren’t in a huge hurry and would like some calming scenery to start their vacation, Telluride Express will shuttle you from the Grand Junction airport, stopping along the way for groceries if you are staying in a condo.
Durango-La Plata Regional Airport (DRO)
Best for Colorado/Utah/Arizona/New Mexico/Cheaper/No Hurry
The Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) is the primary regional airport for southwest Colorado, northwest New Mexico, and the entire Four Corners Region. Like GJT, it is also 2 1/2 hours away from Telluride, but it offers convenient connecting flights from more than 300 cities. Tip: Searching multiple airports will provide a greater selection of flights and rates.
