What to do in Telluride when there is no snow

Added: Nov 21, 2019
Category: Winter in Telluride

Savvy travelers to Colorado will tell you that from mid-November to early April is the best time to visit Telluride, Colorado, even if there is no snow in Telluride in the earliest part of the season. As Jetsetter Magazine states, Colorado “shows a softer side in November, when ski runs are fringed with colorful foliage and double as hiking and biking trails before the big snows come.”

Given that it is shoulder season, you’re guaranteed fewer crowds and lower room rates, perfect for the bargain hunter. Just be forewarned: A number of shops and restaurants curtail their hours and the gondola doesn’t re-open until November 21.  But, if you like the feeling of a quiet town all to yourself, this is the time of year to book a trip to Telluride.

Ski season doesn’t really go full throttle until December. Depending on the weather, Opening Day on Thanksgiving is sometimes pushed back, so if there is no snow, here are some other options to enjoy the outdoors and the town itself.

Easy Day Hikes

Bring your hiking boots and enjoy the sunny side of the trails and experience the best time to visit Telluride for fall colors with temperatures averaging around 45 degrees. Here are two easy, short hikes to get you outside and breathing in that cold mountain air: The San Miguel River Trail (4.25 miles) is perfect for those who just want to follow the river through the town while taking in the views of the box canyon. Cornet Creek Falls (0.5 miles round trip) is another “short hike with a spectacular finish at the 80-foot Cornet Falls.”

Horseback and Jeep Rides

If you’re looking for a less strenuous, but just as exhilarating ride, two options await. Telluride Horseback Adventures offers one- and two-hour horseback rides with views of the San Juan Mountains. Listen to the horse clop along as you pass Juniper and Scrub Oak, while keeping an eye out for wild turkeys, eagles, and deer. 4-WD Tours is another snow-free way to bomb around the high country with zero worry. With their new-model Chevy trucks and personable guides, you’ll go places you’d never be able to see on your own and realize that this is the best time of year to visit Telluride.

Town Park

If there’s no snow, the Town Park, Telluride’s community gathering space, has an outdoor basketball court, two tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, three baseball/kickball fields, a soccer field, a skate park, two ice skating rinks, Disc Golf and more. Plus, they rent equipment such as fishing rods and basketballs, so you don’t have to bring your own.

Cultural Indoors

If the weather is not cooperating, or you just want to explore the cultural side of Telluride indoors, the Ahh Haa School for the Arts is a wonderful place to get creative, take an adult or kids’ art class or view the gallery. Here’s their calendar for November. The Met Opera is putting on a matinee performance of Madame Butterfly on November 16. The Telluride Gallery of Art is another spot to get lost for a couple of hours perusing paintings, photography, sculptures, jewelry and more. And from November 29 to December 21, the Holiday Arts Bazaar features one-of-a-kind, handmade crafts and goods from local artists.
